A few short weeks ago a friend and I set off to surprise my best friend who lives in Portland, OR with a visit. After coordinating with his wife to ensure we didn’t interrupt any plans and nail down all the details, we flew almost 2,000 miles, knocked on his door, and gave him the surprise of a lifetime.
This was my fourth trip to Portland and I’ve been lucky enough to spend time in the city and along the coast, but had never been down to the Mount Hood area.
Mount Hood and The Columbia River Gorge are home to waterfalls, mountains, and iconic stops such as Timberline Lodge which you may recognize as the outside of the hotel in The Shining. We certainly didn’t cover near the amount of area that one can cover as we were doing a day trip, but we saw enough that I continue to be enchanted with the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
There was a light rain the day we went and the fog that descended upon the trees was quite breathtaking. Though we didn’t have the visibility I would have liked to see far across The Columbia River Gorge, there was a beauty in the rain that completely made the trip worth it.
Below are some of my favorite pictures that I took during our day trip. Last fall we took one of my favorite midwest day trips along US Highway 52, and as I continue to travel and work on my photography skills, I find myself gravitating towards nature photography. Hope you enjoy the shots!
